Wiona wasn’t actually scared. It was more amazement, mixed with a touch of nerves. After all, this was her first time seeing real hypnotism in action.

The man who’d walked in with them was Andrew, a true hypnotist and Conrad’s longtime therapist. Besides herself, Andrew was the only person Conrad truly trusted. Today was the first time Wiona had met him. According to Conrad, Andrew had spent the past year studying abroad and had barely returned when Conrad dragged him straight into this situation. Andrew didn’t waste time. He got right to it. “Why did you kill your father?”

Wiona was still skeptical about hypnosis when Louisa, sitting across from them, actually answered. Her voice was calm, almost flat. “Because I needed to set him free.”

“My father was suffering. Everyone hated him. He was insulted, burned, and about to be sentenced to death.” Her eyes were empty. “Everything I did was for him.”

Andrew leaned in. “Set him free? You think death is freedom?”

“Did you ever ask your dad if he wanted to live? Did you think about what would happen to you after all this?”

“If you kill someone, you pay the price. Aren’t you afraid of being sentenced to death yourself?”

Louisa seemed to fight against his questions, like she was struggling inside. Andrew, though, was clearly a pro. He pulled a pocket watch from his coat and placed it on the table. The ticking grew louder and louder, so loud Wiona almost felt dizzy.

Thankfully, Andrew had already set his own mental boundaries, so Wiona wasn’t affected. Across the table, Louisa’s tense expression relaxed.

She answered, “I’m not afraid. Someone promised they’d save me.”

“I’m not really going to get the death penalty. I’ll be rescued, and then I’ll see my father again. We’ll be together. No more goodbyes.”
