Wiona’s stomach started growling, loud enough that she couldn’t ignore it anymore.

She’d been running around all day and now, with the adrenaline gone, she was completely wiped out. She flopped onto the rooftop bench, pressed a hand to her rumbling belly, and gave Conrad her best puppy-dog eyes.

“Conrad, I’m starving. Do we have anything to eat?”

He raised an eyebrow, teasing her. “You couldn’t eat a thing at lunch, but now you remember you’re hungry?”

He grinned, the corners of his eyes crinkling. “Come on. Let’s raid the kitchen.”

Barefoot, Conrad took her hand and led her downstairs. Outside, the whole island glowed as the night settled in, lights twinkling everywhere.

They headed down to the kitchen. Wiona breathed out a sigh of relief when she saw the fridge and counters already loaded with food. Most of it looked like it just needed a little cooking. There were piles of seafood, some fresh veggies, and a basket of fruit.

Conrad gently nudged her into a chair. “Sit down, dinner will be ready in no time.”

Wiona’s eyes sparkled. “You’re really going to cook for me?”

She grinned, half in disbelief. “You could handle a frying pan?”

Conrad just shrugged and tied an apron around his waist. “How hard can it be?”

Famous last words. Minutes later, he was squinting at a recipe on his phone, nearly burning his hand, and looking more frustrated by the second.

“I’m following the instructions exactly…” he muttered, brows drawn together.

Wiona bit back a laugh, then hopped up and took the spatula from him. “Let me handle it before you torch the whole kitchen.”

She moved around like she’d done this a thousand times. In less than thirty minutes, she had five dishes lined up on the table. She even put together a fruit platter and poured two glasses of red wine.

When she set the wine down, she caught Conrad watching her, chin in hand, a soft smile on his face.

“So you’re the real chef here,” he said, his voice warm.

She blushed a little, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “Back when I was with the Morgan family, before the engagement, my mom insisted I learn to cook a few things. Then, when I was with the Salisburys, I’d cook if the housekeeper was taking a day off. And whenever we visited the old house, Alona would always make me show off in the kitchen. I guess I just picked it up over time.”

She trailed off, memories of her time with the Salisburys drifting through her mind.

Conrad was quiet, just listening.

After a moment, Wiona glanced at him, suddenly uncertain.

“Does it bother you when I talk about the Salisburys?”
