“They found the body this morning,” Conrad said quietly.

“She’d taken off her shirt and hanged herself from the cell door.”

“They’re saying it’s a suicide, but do you really buy that?”

Wiona shook her head, pacing the small room restlessly. “Not a chance,” she said, her voice sharp.

She looked up at Conrad, her face tight with worry. “She kept talking about seeing Wilson again. She was convinced she’d saved her dad. Someone in that state of mind would never just give up. No way.”

“It has to be murder, right? Someone killed Louisa and made it look like she took her own life.”

Conrad nodded slowly. “Owen thinks the same thing.”

“But all the surveillance footage from last night is gone. The whole system in the detention center was wiped. Our best hackers can’t get anything back.”

He let out a heavy sigh. “Whoever’s behind this has more reach than we ever imagined.”

He narrowed his eyes, a determined look settling on his face. “Wiona, looks like we’re in for a real fight.”

Before she could say anything else, he pulled her into his lap. “Are you scared?” he asked, searching her eyes.

Wiona slammed her fist onto the table, her frustration clear. “Scared? Why would I be scared? The people who should be afraid are the ones doing all these awful things. They’re the monsters, not us.”

She took a shaky breath. “I mean, sure, Louisa and I had our issues, but how can a human life mean so little to them? Killing her in a detention center, as if it’s nothing… It’s just disgusting.”

For a second, a strange sadness washed over her.

Louisa’s death felt like someone had ripped the curtain right open, making her realize just how terrifying the people behind all this really were.

Wiona gave the island one last, lingering look as they boarded the helicopter back to Stonehill.
