With the permission finally granted, Conrad gave a small nod and hustled Wiona out of the banquet hall, steering her toward the terrace where things were quieter.

He closed the door behind them. Instantly, all the noise from inside faded away.

Conrad shifted, his broad shoulders blocking out any curious stares from the other side of the glass. Then, without hesitating, he wrapped Wiona up in his arms, holding her close.

“Tired?” he asked, his voice soft and warm against her ear. “I could see your legs were about to give out.”

Wiona blinked at him, a little surprised. “How could you tell?”

Conrad’s eyes darkened just a bit, a teasing glint shining through. “How could I not? I know exactly what you look like when your legs go weak.”

Her cheeks turned bright red in a flash.

She shot him a glare and muttered, “You’re impossible.”

He just grinned, totally unbothered. “Yeah, but if I wasn’t, how else could I have gotten you?”

He’d had his eye on her back when she was still married. If he hadn’t been thick-skinned enough, there was no way he would’ve won her back, let alone convinced her and the boys to come home with him.

They stood out on the terrace for a few more peaceful moments, just soaking it in, before Wiona finally sighed. “We should head back inside.”

She really had only wanted some fresh air. If they stayed out too long, who knew what kind of stories the busybodies inside might start spinning about them?
