On Saturday.
Juniper was fast asleep when she was suddenly jolted awake by the ringing of a phone.
"Grandma." Shanley leaned against the headboard, answering the call while gently brushing his thumb against the sleeping girl's cheek.
"Where's Juniper? The main estate hired a new chef, and his cooking is absolutely incredible. Bring her over for dinner," Hannah ordered, her voice booming and business-like.
"Today?" Shanley glanced at the girl whose eyes were still tightly shut, lowering his voice. "Juniper didn't sleep well last night. Today..."
"Shanley Schwartz, you absolute beast!" Before he could even finish his sentence, his grandmother unleashed a furious scolding. "Do you have any idea how young she is? How could you be so ruthless as to exhaust her like that? I swear I will—"
"Grandma, what on earth are you imagining?" Shanley pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling a helpless sigh. "Juniper was up playing video games, nothing else."
"Oh." Hannah let out a loud sigh of relief, still grumbling a mild warning, "Well, you need to be careful. Never mind, put Juniper on the phone. I want to talk to her myself."
"Alright." Shanley held out the phone and put it on speaker.
"Hello," Juniper mumbled groggily, her voice carrying a sleepy, lazy sweetness that warmed the heart.
"Oh, my sweet girl." Hearing Juniper's voice, Hannah's tone flipped faster than a page in a book, instantly becoming incredibly warm and gentle. "Your Miranda and I have prepared so much delicious food. You absolutely have to come over today, alright?"
"Thank you. I'll head over this afternoon," Juniper replied obediently.
"Wonderful! I'll be waiting for you at home."
The call ended. Shanley tossed the phone aside, slid back down, and pulled Juniper into his arms. He spoke with strict authority. "No more staying up late from now on."
