Juniper strolled into her medical class as if nothing had happened.

The looks her classmates gave her shifted from initial fear and wariness to total bewilderment and downright admiration.

"Jenna, did Juniper give you Dr. Nocturne's medical files yet?" the student next to her asked curiously.

"Not yet."

Jenna Sloan bit her lip and shook her head.

"You actually believed that?" Leland Landon sneered, holding up a medical textbook, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "We're talking about Dr. Nocturne! Not even Professor Dawson has ever met him. What makes her so special?"

"I don't think Juniper is the type to make empty promises," Jenna muttered defensively.

"Right."

Leland looked at her as if she were completely insane, rolling his eyes. "If she actually manages to get you Dr. Nocturne's case files, I will..."

Before he could finish, he looked up to find Juniper standing right in the doorway, staring at him with deep amusement.

Leland's voice caught in his throat as he watched Juniper slowly approach.

"You'll run laps around the field again, screaming 'I'm an idiot'?"

He had even been officially dubbed 'Captain Dunce.'

"Jenna, I brought a few case files. Pick whichever ones work best for you."

Juniper couldn't be bothered with Captain Dunce anymore. She handed a heavy folder to Jenna. "If there's anything you don't understand, just ask me."

Mission accomplished, Juniper slid a piece of paper onto the desk. "Do me a favor and pass this leave of absence to Professor Dawson."

"O-Okay."

Jenna nodded blankly, holding the files in one hand and the slip in the other.

Leland shoved the papers back at her and returned to his seat. "Don't end up shooting yourself in the foot and ruining your chances at a Ph.D."

She had only entered this competition with the mindset of giving it a shot anyway.

If the cases were disqualified, the worst that would happen was her score getting voided.

But these files were far too incredible not to take a chance on.

Jenna carefully gathered the documents and tucked them securely into her backpack.

Leland glanced back, the green-eyed monster in his gaze darkening.
