Emmy had no idea what James was feeling. She just relaxed into the massage, letting herself enjoy it for a moment before a new idea popped into her head.

“You’re really good at this,” she said, turning her head a little closer to him. “Why don’t you give my head a massage, too? The acupuncture made my scalp feel all tight and weird.”

James’s hands paused. His voice was low and steady. “Alright. Lie down.”

Emmy didn’t hesitate. She shifted around and ended up with her head right at the edge of the bed.

James stood up, adjusted his position, and slid his long fingers into her hair. His hands were warm, his fingers deft and firm, not too hard, not too soft, pressing just the right way against her scalp.

Emmy let out a soft little sound, half sigh, half moan. “Oh wow, that feels amazing…”

She closed her eyes and grinned, teasing, “Honestly, with hands like this, you could be the star at any fancy spa.”

James laughed, quiet but deep, and pressed a little harder as payback. His voice got a little rough. “Is that what you want? Me working in a spa?”

“No, no, I take it back. Softer, please, go easy on me,” Emmy backtracked immediately, a little dramatic. “I just mean… I wish I could pack you up and take you with me overseas.”

“If I got a massage like this every day in Boston, I’d finish memorizing those neurology textbooks in no time.”

James smiled, his eyes gentler than before. “How long are you staying here?”

Emmy just stretched, eyes still closed, totally at ease. “Until the board meeting’s over, I guess… Four days, maybe?”

James kept massaging, but his brow creased just a bit. Four days. That’s way too short. But he didn’t say anything.

For a while, there was only the soft sound of his fingers moving through her hair.

James thought she was about to drift off, but suddenly Emmy’s eyes opened. She looked clear-eyed, almost searching.

“James?”

“Yeah? What’s up?”

She stared at the ceiling, her voice soft and a little far away. “You know, when I saw that cute little girl earlier, it made me remember something.”

James’s hands froze, his face tense. He sounded stern. “Dr. Hall told you not to try remembering things. Do you want to risk your brain getting worse?”

She didn’t press him, and she tried to shut down the black hole of curiosity inside her. No point asking more. That question would only hurt.

Right now, she decided, looking at James was way better anyway.

She lay there, head dangling slightly off the bed, gazing up at him. The angle was kind of ridiculous, but even upside down, he was distractingly handsome. His jawline was sharper than any model, his features cold and perfect, almost intimidating. His lips were pressed together, his nose high and straight. Even with her upside down, his eyes were deep and mesmerizing. Strong brows, sharp eyes, all of it rugged and beautiful.

This was her guy.

Emmy couldn’t help it, her whole focus drawn in by his looks. The heaviness from before just floated away.

Without even thinking, she blurted out, “Did you… think about me at all while I was gone?”

The words surprised even her, and she went bright red in an instant. She squeezed her eyes shut, pretending to be asleep.

Above her, James let out a low, amused laugh.

The next moment, she felt his warm breath right above her.
