When Mr. Sullivan heard those words, his hands jerked, and the newspaper he was holding made a loud, crinkling sound. Mrs. Sullivan, just about to hand over a cup of tea, lost her grip and spilled tea all over the table.

They stared at each other, completely stunned, with shock written all over their faces.

“Emmy, did you just say… Abriella had a baby?” Mrs. Sullivan’s voice was shaky, like she just heard something out of a fairy tale.

Watching their reactions, Emmy felt more and more out of place. She put her things down and asked carefully, “Uncle, Auntie… you didn’t know about the baby?”

The looks on Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan’s faces were priceless. Abriella had a baby? How could they not know? Things between them and Abriella had smoothed over more than a year ago, but Abriella and Will still rarely came by. After Emmy went missing, the couple got so caught up in searching for her that visiting with family was the last thing on their minds. It was only recently that Abriella stopped by once to tell them Emmy had been found, so they could finally stop worrying.

The longer Mrs. Sullivan thought about it, the angrier she became. “That girl! How could she go off and have a baby without telling us?”

“We were against her marrying a firefighter, sure, but we never said she couldn’t have a child!”

“No, this can’t wait. I’m calling her right now. She needs to bring that child home immediately.”

With that, Mrs. Sullivan snatched her phone from the coffee table and stormed off toward the garden, her whole body bristling with frustration.

Emmy watched her go, frowning a little. She hadn’t expected Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan to truly have no idea about Abriella’s child. It just didn’t make sense. The little girl looked at least a year old. How could they have hidden something like that from her own parents when everyone lived in the same city? Unless…
