Krystina hung up and glanced up, just in time to catch Emmy holding the bracelet, turning it over in her hand.

She hurried to explain, “That’s the one you gave Danny. I liked it, so I took it. I wore it for a bit this morning and forgot to put it away.”

Emmy raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smile tugging at her lips as she looked at Krystina. “When Danny gave it to you, did he happen to mention what it’s actually for?”

Krystina stared, confused. “It has a purpose? Was I not supposed to just take it?”

Emmy’s smile only grew. “Of course not.”

Back on the Star Jewel, she had given Danny that bracelet, half-joking that he should keep it as a gift for his future girlfriend. And now, suddenly, here it was on Krystina’s desk. Plus, every time Danny reported to her, he couldn’t go more than a few sentences without bringing up Mr. Carter. Maybe there was more to that than she thought.

“Well, since Danny gave it to you, you should keep it safe.” Emmy’s eyes sparkled with meaning. She took Krystina’s hand and pressed the bracelet into her palm.

Krystina thought her little sister was acting weird, but she didn’t dwell on it. She pulled open a drawer, grabbed a velvet jewelry box, slipped the bracelet inside, and shut the drawer again.

Emmy didn’t say anything else. She waved goodbye, turned on her heel, and walked out.

As soon as Emmy stepped out of the office, Danny rushed over, ready to give her the daily updates. Emmy stopped him with a raised hand. “I’m just going to walk around the company for a bit, see how everyone’s doing.”

She paused, her eyes lingering on Danny’s face, then glanced back at the office door. There was something playful and suggestive in her look.

“You and Mr. Carter…” Emmy let the words hang, then grinned. “You two should talk.”

She strode away in her heels, leaving Danny even more confused. He scratched his head, completely lost. Talk to Mr. Carter? About what?

Still puzzled, Danny opened the CEO’s office door. Krystina was sitting at her desk, head down, focused on paperwork, not even looking up.

“Mr. Carter,” Danny called softly, testing the waters.

Krystina kept writing, her voice cool. “What is it?”

Danny hesitated, then blurted out, “What did Mr. Lincoln just say to you?”

Krystina finished signing, closed the file, and finally looked at him. “Not much.”

“It makes a huge difference!” Danny looked at her in disbelief. “You should have explained to Mr. Lincoln!”

“When she gave me that bracelet, she said it was something for us to give to our future girlfriends!”

“How was I supposed to know you would…”

The room went quiet for a few seconds.

Krystina’s pen dropped onto the desk with a loud clatter.

“What?” She jumped up from her chair, eyes wide in shock. “A gift for a girlfriend? Why didn’t you tell me?”

Danny looked just as aggrieved. He spread his hands helplessly. “You didn’t give me a chance. You just took it and left.”

He sighed. “Now it’s a mess. Mr. Lincoln saw it on your desk and told me to come talk to you. She definitely thinks something’s going on.”

“She probably thinks we’re…” He didn’t finish, but the implication was obvious.
