Twenty minutes later, Emmy stepped out. James was hunched over his phone, typing out a reply, but the sound of her made him look up without thinking. In that instant, his breath caught.
Emmy was barefoot on the carpet, wearing nothing but an oversized men’s shirt that hung loosely from her shoulders. The hem barely covered the tops of her thighs, leaving her long, pale legs out in the open. She looked sweet and innocent, but there was something undeniably tempting about her, too.
She’d just washed away the concealer from her neck. Now, the marks he’d left on her the night before stood out, deep red against her fair skin. James swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple moving as his eyes darkened with a heat he could barely hide. He quickly turned away and tucked his phone out of sight.
“Go to sleep. We have to be up early for work tomorrow.” His voice came out rough and low.
Emmy was already exhausted. After the chaos of the day and everything that happened last night, her eyes could barely stay open. She pulled back the covers and slipped into bed.
Half asleep, she felt James slide in beside her. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. Emmy instinctively hooked her leg around his waist.
“Mmm…” Her voice was soft and sleepy, almost like a kitten, a hint of teasing in her tone. “Do you want to?”
James froze, every muscle going tense. His breathing got heavier. He cupped the back of her head and pressed her gently into his chest.
“There aren’t any condoms here. Go to sleep. When tomorrow’s over, I’ll make it up to you.”
Emmy was so tired she didn’t even notice what she’d said. As soon as she heard him say “go to sleep,” she curled up in his arms, perfectly content. While she’d been abroad, she barely slept, always tossing and turning, never able to rest. But with him holding her, she slept deeply, dreamless until morning.
When she finally opened her eyes, it was already seven. The bed beside her was empty. Emmy sat up and spotted James, already dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that made him look impossibly tall and sharp. He was standing by the mirror, fastening his cufflinks.
When he saw her awake, James nodded toward a nearby rack. “Your things are ready. Get washed up and come out for breakfast.”
Emmy slipped out of bed, washed up, and headed into the walk-in closet. The shelves that had been empty were now lined with several designer outfits from the latest season. Jewelry, skincare, and makeup—all her favorite brands—were laid out neatly.
That was just like him. Efficient to the extreme.
She picked out a white pantsuit. The trousers fell straight to her ankles, and she slipped on a pair of white stiletto heels. On her wrist, she wore a platinum Patek Philippe watch, and simple diamond studs sparkled on her ears. The look was cool and polished, making her seem both elegant and powerful.
