Cadence’s face grew cold.

She didn’t rise to the bait, just swept her gaze calmly around the parking lot. Her eyes paused for a moment on Emmy’s car parked nearby, then slid back to Shelly. Her voice stayed even and cool.

“Shelly, are you sure you want to have this conversation right here?”

Shelly just let out a sharp laugh.

“What’s wrong? Are you scared? Worried someone else will hear about your dirty secrets?”

“I’d say it even if every single person in the world was watching.”

She stepped closer, her eyes filled with scorn.

“Everyone in our circle knows exactly what you are.”

“Do you really think those society ladies respect you for you?”

“Please. They only respect the mask you wear. Take it off, and you’re not even good enough to shine my shoes.”

Cadence looked at the woman in front of her, disgust flickering in her eyes. Shelly used to know how to keep up appearances. Now jealousy had twisted her out of shape.

“You done?” Cadence’s voice was icy.

“Not even close!” Shelly snapped, about to keep going.

A sharp sound cracked through the air. Cadence’s slap landed so fast, Shelly’s head snapped to the side. She staggered, barely catching herself.

Her hand flew to her cheek, which was already swelling and burning. For a second, her mind went blank. She tasted blood, sharp and metallic, at the corner of her mouth.

Wiona, standing behind her, went pale. She hadn’t even seen it coming. Cadence’s slap was quick, ruthless, and gave no warning at all.

Wiona rushed forward, stepping in front of Shelly protectively, eyes wary on Cadence.

Shelly slowly turned her head back, disbelief all over her face. Her fingers touched her lip and came away stained with blood. Her pupils shrank in shock.

“You… you hit me?”

Cadence took a step forward. The force of her presence pressed down over everyone.

“I did.”

Shelly shrank back a little, her voice shaking. “What… what are you going to do?”

Cadence took a wet wipe from her assistant and cleaned the hand she’d just used, her movements calm and precise. Her eyes stayed as cold as ice.

“Looks like you didn’t learn your lesson last time. You really have the nerve to show up and start this again.”

She pulled her phone out of her bag and called a number, putting it on speaker.

It rang once before someone answered.
