The sun was shining just right outside the old house. James reached into the backseat, scooped Joey up with one arm, and settled him comfortably against his side. He paused, sensing something, and turned to look. His eyes landed on a taxi that had suddenly slowed down on the side road. The midday sun was blazing, bouncing off the taxi’s rear window in a blinding burst of light. He couldn’t see who was inside. James narrowed his eyes for a second, then let it go. Moonlight Bay was always full of lost tourists and taxis taking wrong turns. Nothing unusual.

But then a tiny, shaky voice tugged at his ear.

“Mama... Mama...”

Joey was slumped against his shoulder, those big dark eyes locked on the spot where the taxi had disappeared. James froze, following his son’s gaze. The taxi had already turned the corner by the old tower and was gone.

He scooped Joey up again, but the boy just stared at the empty street, breathing hard. The taxi was gone. Joey stood for a moment, then plopped down right there on the pavement.

A wail split the quiet, echoing through the old house’s courtyard. Real tears, big and heavy, rolled down his cheeks. His heartbreak was almost a physical thing.

Across the yard, Dolly had been holding Teresa’s hand. When she saw her brother crying, her own eyes filled up. She didn’t even know why she was sad, but suddenly, it felt like the whole world was unfair. She ran over, sat down next to Joey, and let loose a howl of her own.
