The next night, the resort threw a huge farewell bonfire party on the private beach. A towering fire burned in the middle of the sand, sparks popping and flying into the dark sky. Waves crashed against the rocks, upbeat music thumped in the background, and everyone was wrapped up in the wild, joyful energy. The staff held hands as they danced and sang around the flames.

Normally, at events like this, Danny and Sylvia would stick close to Krystina. Ms. Carter had a reputation at the company—she was famous for being insanely strict about work. Most people were a little scared of her, and nobody dared to just walk up and grab her hand for a dance.

But tonight felt different. All day, Danny had completely ignored Krystina. Even when she spotted him on the path and started to call out, he would slip into the crowd and vanish. Now, at the party, he was hiding at the very back of the group, as far from Krystina as possible.

She figured he was still embarrassed about what happened yesterday. He was a young guy, after all, and that kind of social disaster in front of your female boss was probably going to take some time to get over. Krystina didn’t overthink it. She just grabbed a junior secretary and Sylvia, then let herself get lost in the music, dancing through two songs.

When the music finally slowed down and everyone drifted off to grab drinks, Krystina picked up the gift she’d brought and headed for the water. The cool sea breeze tugged at her hair. Danny stood there, staring out at the dark, restless ocean, a glass of champagne dangling from his hand. When he saw her coming out of the corner of his eye, his first instinct was to turn and walk away.

Krystina moved faster and caught his arm before he could escape. “I need to talk to you.”

Everyone nearby noticed the gift box in her hand, and suddenly the mood shifted. A few of Danny’s buddies exchanged looks, grinning like they were in on some secret.

Someone let out a loud whistle, and the teasing started right away. “Danny, look at you! Hiding your skills all this time.”

“Go for it, man! Don’t mess this up!”

These assistants knew Danny better than anyone and had long suspected how he felt about Krystina. The only person who didn’t seem to get it was Ms. Carter herself.

Danny flushed with embarrassment as the teasing grew. He glanced at the box in Krystina’s hand. The wrapping was so nice, definitely not something she picked up at the last minute. “If I hear one more word, you’re each getting two project proposals to finish tonight. Clearly none of you need any sleep.”
