Abriella swallowed a spoonful of soup, her voice rough and tired.

“Don’t stare. It’s been like this every day.”

She barely finished before a group of nurses rushed past, pushing a gurney at full speed.

The soldier on it couldn’t have been much older than twenty. His right leg was gone, blown away, blood soaking half the sheet and dripping onto the floor in thick, dark drops. It was impossible to look away.

“Plasma, now! Get the defibrillator!” A doctor shouted, climbing up onto the gurney to start CPR right there.

They didn’t even make it to the operating room. The doctor suddenly froze.

He checked the soldier’s eyes, then let his hands fall. He pulled off his mask, shaking his head.

“He’s gone.”

“Time of death, nine forty-five.”

For a second, the whole hallway just stopped.
