James couldn’t believe what he was seeing. That clueless blond foreigner had his head so close to Emmy’s ear, they might as well have been sharing secrets. Their shoulders nearly touched, and Emmy didn’t even try to move away. Every now and then, she nodded, turning to smile at him, like she was actually enjoying it.
Jealousy and irritation shot through James, making his whole body tense. He clenched his fists on his knees, and suddenly the air around him felt icy cold. The investors nearby sensed the chill, shuffling in their seats and edging away.
James glared at the back of Emmy and John’s heads, grinding his teeth. He pulled out his phone, face dark, and typed quickly.
This place is packed. Don’t get too close to any men.
Especially that blond guy. Keep your distance.
He sent the messages, eyes fixed on Emmy’s back, waiting for her to see her phone. But the minutes ticked by. Emmy’s phone screen lit up inside her bag, but she’d put it on silent before coming in. It just lay there, ignored.
Instead of checking her messages, Emmy seemed even more into her conversation. She handed John some papers, and the two of them leaned in, heads almost touching as they pointed things out together.
James let out a frustrated laugh, pressing his tongue to the roof of his mouth, his gaze hard and unblinking. From his seat above the crowd, arms crossed, he stared at the pair, looking like he could burn a hole right through them. If looks could kill, John would have been toast a hundred times over.
Down on the floor, Emmy was chatting with John when she suddenly felt something weird. The back of her neck tingled, and a cold shiver crept up her spine. She paused mid-sentence, then, almost without thinking, turned to glance over her shoulder at the dark VIP section.
The lights in the room had dimmed. Most of the guests had already found their seats. The only real light came from the stage, where a few spotlights swung back and forth. It was hard to see much in the shadows, but Emmy’s eyes found a familiar face just a row or two behind her, separated only by the aisle.
Abis.
