Sylvia paused for a second. Steve saw her hesitation and gave the throttle a quick twist, making the engine growl like a wild animal. “Come on, take a spin around the island with me. It’ll be a rush. The views are incredible, and you’ll get a close look at that GlowOcean cruise ship.”

Sylvia hesitated, feeling that pull of curiosity. She wanted to have fun, but going with Steve… she was on the fence. Steve picked up on her doubts and got impatient. “Hurry up, don’t waste time. Just one lap, maybe an hour or two. If you’re not coming, I’ll go by myself.”

She shrieked, arms snapping tight around Steve’s waist. “Steve! Slow down! Seriously, slow down!”

Sylvia could feel herself turning pale. Her voice was barely even audible through the wind. Gusts whipped at her face and within seconds, her sunhat was snatched up and vanished over the endless sea.

Steve ignored her completely. If anything, he squeezed the throttle harder. The jet ski bounced mercilessly over the waves. Every jolt made Sylvia feel like her insides were rattling. The speed just kept building, turning the world into a blur. At first, there were other tourists nearby, but as they flew along, the world grew quiet except for the roar of the waves and the deafening engine.

Sylvia’s eyes clamped shut, her grip around Steve’s waist so tight, her knuckles ached.

She had no idea how much time passed—it could have been ten minutes, or it could’ve been half an hour. Suddenly, the jet ski spun to a dramatic stop. Sylvia’s stomach lurched, and she barely managed to scramble off before collapsing on the sand.

Her legs buckled as soon as she stood, and she dropped to her knees, dry heaving. Tears stung her eyes.

Steve sat on the seat, looking down, totally indifferent. If anything, he just looked irritated and a little amused. “Really? That’s all you got? You’re the one who wanted to try all the extreme water sports.”
