Teresa shook her head, smiling softly. “No, it’s just too crowded here. Everywhere you turn, there are people everywhere.” She glanced at Andrew and continued, “We’re thinking of coming back when things quiet down, so we can actually relax and enjoy ourselves.”

“And besides, Deep Blue Tech needs to wrap things up before the New Year. There’s the annual meeting and a bunch of unfinished projects.” She gave Andrew a quick look and added, “Your Andrew’s got his hands full with work. We figured it’s better to head back to the Capital early, so we don’t mess up his schedule.”

Emmy nodded as she listened to her mom, even though her mom hadn’t said anything about her own busy life, just Andrew’s. Emmy understood, though—her mom was really worried about the two little ones back home in the Capital.

Just thinking about them made Emmy’s heart tighten painfully, like someone was squeezing it. Her hands curled into fists before she even realized it.

Teresa noticed Emmy’s mood shift and assumed it was just because she was reluctant to say goodbye. She walked over and took Emmy’s hand, gently leading her to the couch. “What about you?” she asked kindly. “When are you two planning to go back to the Capital?”

“We’re planning on staying for another week or so,” she told Teresa. “Once everything here is on track, we’ll head back.” She looked her mom straight in the eye. “Don’t worry, Mom. We’ll definitely be back in time for New Year’s.”

Teresa looked at her daughter’s tired face and felt a pang of worry. “Don’t push yourself too hard. It’s not a big deal if you can’t make it back for the holidays. I just want you both to be okay.”

But Emmy turned her mother’s hand and squeezed, her expression determined. “No. I want to come back.”

“Last year, I couldn’t spend New Year’s with you. This year, no matter what, I want to be there with you.”
