Abis leaned closer, straining to catch her words.

As soon as he understood, he turned as pale as a ghost. His whole body went rigid.

No way. That was impossible. The medication was supposed to last three years. It hadn’t even been a full year.

If she remembered what he’d done to her during that time, if she remembered her past with James, then everything he’d carefully built between them over the last month would be meaningless. Just a joke.

She’d hate him. She’d never forgive him.

A wild, desperate look flashed in Abis’s eyes. If she could remember, he’d just make her forget again. If he had to, he’d give her another dose. As long as he took her someplace no one could find, she would still be his.

He whipped his head around, jaw clenched, veins standing out on his neck. “Start the boat!” he shouted toward the cockpit. “Now, go! Get us out of here!”

The yacht’s engines fired up, rumbling loud, churning up the water behind them.

But just as the boat started to pull away, a bloody hand grabbed the rail. Penny, smeared in blood, somehow hauled herself back onto the deck. Blood poured from the gash on her stomach, and her face was so pale she looked dead already, but her eyes were bright—fierce and unyielding.

With one hand pressed to her wound and the other gripping a dagger, she pushed herself upright, teeth clenched, staring right at Abis.

“Let her go…” she forced out, voice raw. “Let the madam go!”

Abis stared at Penny in disbelief. How was she even still moving? How had she managed to catch up to them, with those injuries?

Right then, his assistant burst out of the cockpit, nearly tripping over himself, face twisted with panic. “Sir, it’s bad! We just got intel—James and the Major General are heading this way! They’re less than five kilometers out! If we don’t move now, they’ll catch up with the helicopter and we’ll never get away!”

Abis’s heart hammered in his chest. James. It was always James, always screwing up his plans.
