The moment the door swung wide, the smile froze on Laney's face. Her eyes bulged as she stared at the mechanical body still spewing black smoke across the leather seats.
Just then, with a muffled thump, the SUV's trunk popped open from the inside. A fluffy head poked out. Nina clung to the edge of the bumper, grinning as she waved at Laney. "Hey Laney, it looks like this robot is kind of totaled." Laney was rendered completely speechless.
Using both her hands and feet, Nina scrambled nimbly out of the trunk. There had been no room left in the passenger cabin earlier, so she had simply tucked herself into the back. It was surprisingly spacious and perfect for hiding away to play on her phone. Patting the dust off her clothes, she peeked into the car. "Do you want me to help you carry it to your car, Laney?"
Laney's eyes instantly reddened. Trembling, she reached out and slowly stroked her beloved robot. The second her fingertips brushed the mangled edges of metal, her tears spilled over.
James stepped out of the driver's seat. Looking down at the grieving woman, his voice was low and steady. "I apologize. She is entirely wrecked. Calculate exactly how much you spent building this android, and I will transfer the full amount to you."
Laney's fingers flinched sharply. She sniffled and wiped her tears away. "There is no need. Even though I poured a fortune into her, I would much rather she take those fatal wounds. I could never bear to see my idol suffer even the slightest injury."
She turned her head, giving the perfectly safe Emmy a deep look. "Besides, I secretly customized this android using my idol's image, which was a blatant violation of her portrait rights. The fact that she is not angry with me today is more than enough."
Looking back at the unrecognizable android, a flicker of resolute tenderness crossed Laney's eyes. "She took all of this damage on behalf of my idol. Her mission is successfully complete."
Startled, Laney immediately tried to pull her hand away. "No! Really, I cannot take this!" she refused, her tone urgent and entirely sincere. "My robot shielded you from danger. That means I actually helped you! It is an absolute honor, and I absolutely do not need any compensation!"
But Emmy caught her wrist and held it firm. "Take it." Staring into Laney's eyes, her expression was etched with a seriousness that brokered no argument. "Even if you dislike wearing something this old-fashioned, you can sell it to recoup your losses. I refuse to let anyone who genuinely cares for me suffer a loss on my behalf. If you do not accept this, it will weigh heavily on my conscience, and I will be very upset."
Hearing that her idol would be upset brought Laney's resistance to a sudden halt. She bit her lower lip, her brows knitting closely together as she wrestled with the decision. Finally, she gave in, gripping the emerald bracelet tightly. Yet, her sharp eyes caught a detail with the trademark meticulousness of a devoted fan. "This is not yours, is it? You were not wearing it all day."
