The color in James’s eyes deepened instantly, swirling with an impenetrable darkness. Gripping Emmy tightly, he abruptly spun around and pinned her against the solid wood of the door. He dipped his head and kissed her again, but this time his touch was heavy, aggressive, and blazing with heat. His large hands roamed freely over her clothes, kneading with a reckless intensity. Emmy winced, her brow knitting together as a jolt of pain shot through her. Her mind spun dizzily under the onslaught of his kiss, utterly bewildered by his sudden loss of control. Was he acting this way because he was overjoyed about the baby, or was it something else entirely?

Before she could gather her thoughts, James reached up and tore at the collar of her shirt. His lips, hot and hurried, were a breath away from marking her pale collarbone.

"No..." Emmy finally regained enough clarity to push against him. She turned her face away, panting as she rejected his advance. "Do not leave a mark here. I have a dinner party with Abriella and the others soon."

James did not force the issue, but he let his face drop heavily into the curve of her slender neck. His scorching breath washed over her skin, sending violent shivers down her spine. He breathed heavily like a wild beast trying to calm a raging storm, his chest rising and falling in rapid, jagged motions. Feeling the sheer turbulence of his emotions, Emmy reached up to stroke his crisp, short hair. "What is wrong, honey?" she asked, her voice laced with confusion. "Are you unhappy?"

Buried against her collarbone, James exhaled another ragged breath. It took him a long time before he finally forced out two hoarse, muffled words. "I am happy."

And he was. He had already mentally prepared himself for her pregnancy and wholeheartedly accepted this unexpected new life. What truly drove him to the brink of madness was her secret. The secret she would rather take to her grave than share with the husband who shared her bed. Yet, just today, she had gone to the hospital and casually confessed it to Steve! Why? How was that fair? How could she guard a secret so fiercely against him, only to hand it over so easily to another man? The more he thought about it, the heavier the suffocating weight in his chest became.

James snapped his head up, the corners of his eyes flushed a faint red. He stared at the woman he had pinned against the door, his dark eyes churning with a storm of complex, agonizing emotions. A second later, he descended upon her lips in another punishing, almost ferocious kiss.

This time, Emmy distinctly felt the turbulent anger radiating from him. She furrowed her brow and tried to break off the escalating kiss, but James only grew more demanding, pressing her flush against the door and refusing to yield a single inch.

But James just stood there in silence, his deep, dark eyes boring into her without blinking. He stared at her for a long time before a bitter, self deprecating smile pulled at the corner of his mouth. "What about you? Why are you hiding secrets from me?"

Emmy froze, momentarily thrown completely off balance by the question. She instinctively frowned. "What are you talking about?"

James chuckled darkly. Even when he pushed her right to the edge of the truth, she still refused to confess on her own. He had no choice but to rip the bandage off himself. "You and Steve share the exact same dreams. Why didn't you tell me?"
