Emmy turned her head, pulling her gaze away from the window to let it rest on his face. "Weren't you the one who was mad at me?"
James choked on his words for a moment. He held her hand, his thumb gently caressing the soft skin of her knuckles. Will was actually right about one thing. If she refused to tell him that secret, she definitely had her own reasons. As her husband, he shouldn't always back himself into a corner over it. And he certainly shouldn't stubbornly interrogate her, dig into her past, or take his frustration out on her just because of his own obsession.
Thinking of this, James lifted Emmy's hand and pressed a kiss to her skin. "I apologize. I will punish myself when we get back tonight."
Emmy turned to look at him, asking out of sheer curiosity. "Punish yourself how?"
James hooked the corner of his lips into a smirk, using a low, husky tone that only the two of them could understand. "By letting you be on top."
Emmy froze for a second before the meaning of his words suddenly crashed into her brain. Her face instantly burned completely red. She instinctively glanced back at the rear seat. The exhausted Nina was leaning against the leather, blinking her innocent, wide eyes. Emmy glared at James, lowering her voice to scold him. "There is a child right here, what nonsense are you spouting."
At those words, Nina immediately sat up straight and argued back with a serious face. "Ma'am, I am not a child anymore. Sir is right, a lot of my brothers and sisters were already on the battlefield when they were my age. So I am an adult now."
Nina paused, her big eyes revealing a crystal clear sort of foolishness. "Though I really do not understand what you two were just talking about." She leaned curiously over the back of their seats, poking her head forward. "Why did sir say he would be punishing himself by letting you be on top? Is that more painful than running twenty miles?"
Emmy nearly choked on her own saliva. She coughed violently a couple of times, her cheeks burning even hotter. James glanced at Nina through the rearview mirror, the curve of his lips carrying a wickedly rogue edge. "If you do not understand, go study up in your free time. Do not keep asking such stupid questions."
Nina shrank her neck back, thoroughly intimidated by his cold, hard tone. She immediately clamped her mouth shut, not daring to ask another thing. But the little girl was rebelliously scheming in her head. She would just have to go ask Jada later, or maybe Uncle Brett. She absolutely could not let her boss think she was stupid.
Emmy sighed helplessly as she looked at Nina's confused and wronged expression.
