Sylvia froze, her gaze traveling up the man's arm.
Steve stood before her, pointing at the item in his hand. "I checked the fridge. It is completely empty. I could not even find an ice pack. But I did dig up a piece of mystery meat that has been frozen for God knows how long. I soaked a towel in cold water and wrapped it around the meat. The temperature is just right." He stared intensely at her swollen cheek, his voice dropping low. "Take it. Ice your face."
Rooted to the spot, Sylvia failed to process the gesture for a moment. When she didn't move, Steve forcefully grabbed her hand and shoved the makeshift ice pack into her palm.
"I already made a few calls to get some workers down here," he continued, slipping effortlessly back into his entitled, bossy persona. "When they arrive, they will clean up the yard. A woman like you has no business doing heavy labor. If you really need something to do, go to the kitchen and cook me a bowl of noodles. I am starving to death."
Sylvia lowered her eyes, staring at the bundled towel in her hands. Slowly, her face completely blank, she placed it on the concrete steps beside her.
"I will clean it myself." She stubbornly turned her back to him and resumed moving the heavy bricks.
Watching her defiant silhouette, Steve let out a helpless sigh. She was as stubborn as a mule, refusing both carrots and sticks. Giving up, he turned around and marched right back into the kitchen.
The yard fell silent again, save for the rhythmic clattering of Sylvia stacking bricks. Some time passed before Sylvia absentmindedly straightened her back and glanced toward the kitchen. What she saw nearly scared her soul out of her body. Thick, black smoke was billowing continuously out of the kitchen windows and door.
"Steve!" Dropping a brick, Sylvia sprinted toward the kitchen. "What are you doing? Are you trying to burn this place down?"
