Danny let out a long sigh. “James sent Ollie off to a military academy.”

Emmy just listened. She didn’t say anything.

Danny went on, “James thinks Ollie’s got a real knack for mechanics and engineering. The people at the academy were pretty impressed, so they want to help him develop his skills. Mr. Carter agreed too.”

Emmy nodded. “Ollie really is a genius. Who knows, maybe he’ll end up doing something amazing one day.”

Danny’s voice softened, full of regret. “It’s just such a waste. His dad got into trouble, so now Ollie’s got a black mark on his record. He’ll never pass the background checks. There’s no way he’ll get into the military now.” Danny shook his head. “His dad messed up, and it ruined Ollie’s chances too.”

Emmy’s heart sank. “So what’s Ollie supposed to do now?”

Danny was quick to reassure her. “James said if Ollie can really master his skills, even if the military’s off the table, he’ll still have plenty of options. The country isn’t going to give up on someone as talented as him.”

That made Emmy feel a little better. She finally let out the breath she’d been holding.

Once everything was settled with her friend, Emmy remembered something else and turned to Danny. “Oh, right. Ivy’s getting discharged the day after tomorrow. Can you pick up some top-notch health supplements for her? And send someone with her family’s car to deliver everything back to her hometown. Also, pick out a nice bouquet for me. I want to send her off.”

“Of course, Ms. Lincoln,” Danny said, already turning to take care of it.

A couple of mornings later, Emmy made her way to the hospital. Ivy had been there for almost two months, and she’d gotten so thin it made Emmy’s chest ache just to look at her.
