A little confused, she blinked and figured the manager must have called the wrong person, so she stepped back behind James.

James didn’t show any reaction. He just gave the manager a cool look and said quietly, “Just call her Madam.”

The manager was quick to pick up on things. That single look from James sent a chill down his spine, and he realized he had spoken too soon.

She really was the owner of the island, but obviously Mr. Nelson hadn’t told her yet.

He bent down right away, turning to Emmy with extra respect. “Yes, yes, my mistake. I misspoke.”

“Madam, welcome. Please come in.”

“We’re all so happy to hear you’ll be staying on the island for a while.”

The manager wiped sweat from his forehead as he led them in, trying hard to make up for his slip. “I’ve set aside a few gentle purebred horses for you to enjoy.”

Emmy walked beside James, still puzzled. How could someone misspeak and call her the island owner?

But her curiosity faded fast as they arrived at the stables.

He went down the line, introducing each horse.
