James had just unbuttoned a couple of buttons on his shirt, showing off his collarbones without even thinking about it. When he heard what she said, he paused, frowning a little as he looked over at her.
“This is the top suite at headquarters. It’s the only one, too.” His eyes turned a little darker. “We're married. If we sleep in separate rooms here, people might start talking.”
He pressed his tongue to the roof of his mouth, clearly not thrilled, but still managed to keep his voice steady. “If it really bothers you, I’ll sleep on the sofa in the living room.”
He was already turning to leave when she called out, “Hey! Wait!”
Looking at his slightly lonely figure walking away, Emmy suddenly felt a wave of guilt. He’d taken care of her for so long, brought her to doctors, taught her how to protect herself, and now he was even giving her half of his company. And here she was, not even letting him sleep on the same bed. That felt way too heartless. Besides, they were married, after all.
“Um… you don’t have to sleep on the sofa.” Emmy scratched at her hair, her cheeks burning. “The bed’s huge. We can just share.”
Anyway, it wasn’t like they hadn’t shared a bed before. That night she got drunk, they slept together and nothing even happened… right?
James stopped and turned around. Instantly, the tension in his face melted into something soft and warm. “Go wash up first.”
He changed his tune so fast that Emmy almost wondered if he’d been faking the whole sad act just to get her to give in. But she’d already said it, so there was no taking it back. She grabbed her pajamas and headed into the bathroom, making her shower as quick as humanly possible.
When James went in to shower after her, Emmy stared at the big bed, her nerves kicking in. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust James. After spending so much time together, she knew he was nothing but a gentleman. He’d never take advantage of her. She just… didn’t trust herself.
The guy was stupidly good-looking—absurdly so—with a body that looked like it belonged on a magazine cover. Especially those muscles. If she lost her self-control and did something crazy again, like when she was drunk last time, what then? No, she needed a backup plan.
Emmy swallowed, her eyes darting everywhere but at him. “I move around a lot when I sleep. Didn’t want to bother you.”
He clearly didn’t believe her. “Emmy, if I really wanted to do something, do you think this blanket would stop me?”
Emmy screamed inside her head, I’m trying to protect you from me! But there was no way she was saying that out loud. She stubbornly turned her back to him. “I’m keeping it there. I’m tired. Going to sleep now. You should sleep too.”
James looked at her, shaking his head in disbelief and fighting back a laugh. She was still so wary. At the same time, something hot and restless stirred in his chest. He could look, but not touch, and now there was a whole “river” between them. How long was this going to last?
Frustrated, he tossed his towel aside, turned off the light, and slid into bed, the scent of his fresh shower still clinging to him.
