The first light of morning crept into the room.

A piercing cry shattered the peace.

The little girl was the first to wake, her eyes squeezed tight as she let out a wail. “Milk… want milk…” Her voice was surprisingly loud for someone so tiny.

Her brother, sleeping right beside her, jolted awake. He peeked over, saw his sister crying her heart out, then just calmly turned over, pulled the blanket over his head, and tried to go back to sleep.

James panicked almost instantly. He’d faced down enemies before and never felt this lost. He reached out, hands stiff, wanting to pick her up but terrified of holding her wrong. He thought about soothing her but had no clue what to say.

“What… what’s wrong?” he fumbled, tapping the crib awkwardly. “Don’t cry, please…”

Just then, the door swung open.

Lorraine hurried in, holding two bottles. “It’s alright, Mr. Nelson. She’s just hungry.”

She moved smoothly to the bed and handed the little girl a bottle. The crying stopped instantly, cut off the second she tasted the milk. Chubby hands clamped around the bottle and she started gulping it down like she hadn’t eaten in days.

Her brother, still curled up under the covers, heard her eating and changed his mind about sleeping. He shuffled out from under the blanket, his hair sticking up everywhere. In a small, sleepy voice, he called out, “Milk!”

Lorraine smiled and handed him the second bottle. He didn’t need any help, just grabbed it and started drinking, eyes bright with satisfaction.

As he drank, his big dark eyes suddenly landed on the tall man standing by the bed. He stared, curiosity written all over his face.

James froze. He actually felt nervous under the gaze of this tiny boy. His throat was dry, his palms were sweaty. The two just stared at each other.

A few seconds ticked by.

James took a deep breath and leaned forward a little. He tried to put on a friendly smile but ended up looking way too serious, like he was giving a briefing before a big mission.

While she carried him over to the changing table, his sister finished her bottle too. She tossed it aside, but she still looked hungry. Her big round eyes darted around until she spotted her brother’s discarded bottle. She crawled over, grabbed it, and stuck it in her mouth.

A couple of sucks later, she realized it was empty. She frowned, tossed the bottle away, and turned her head.

Her gaze landed right on James, who was still standing there, completely lost.

For a moment, they just stared at each other. Her eyes, the same shape and shine as Emmy’s, made his breath catch.

James opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but realized anything he’d say would be way too serious for a little girl to understand.

Just then, Teresa came over. She bent down, pinched the girl’s chubby cheek, and pointed at James with a big smile.

“Dolly, this is Daddy. Can you say ‘Daddy’ for me?”
