Hospital Room.
As soon as Rupert walked in, Reese, lying in the bed, managed a smile.
She struggled to sit up. “Finished talking to Dr. Chris? I told you I’m fine. You always worry too much.”
Rupert didn’t reply. He stopped at the foot of the bed, looking at Reese with a chill in his eyes.
Reese’s smile faltered. Her hands clutched the blanket, knuckles white.
“What’s wrong? Are you worried I’ll blame Sylvia? Don’t worry. I’m not going to make a big deal out of it—besides, she’s my brother’s girlfriend.”
She rushed to explain herself, blurting it out too quickly. When she finished, she realized she’d said too much.
Biting her lip, she looked at Rupert, her pale lips turning an odd red.
Rupert leaned forward, arms bracing on the bed rail, eyes cold as a winter storm.
“Reese, you shouldn’t have done this.”
“What?” Reese’s lips trembled.
“The pills.”
“I’m sorry. I really didn’t know my aunt would take my meds,” Reese said, her eyes dropping, voice catching.
“Did you really not know?”
Rupert stared her down, his presence icy and unyielding.
Reese’s shoulders tensed. She didn’t answer for a long time.
“I specifically told the house staff to check your meds every time you go out,” Rupert said flatly. “Kay might be able to fool you, but she can’t fool the Garcia family staff—unless you covered for her. You already knew Sylvia was at my place, didn’t you?”
“I... I didn’t know,” Reese’s head hung lower.
“Let me make it simple. You knew exactly what Kay was planning. You decided to play along.”
Rupert’s words tore away Reese’s last shield.
Her whole body shook. When she looked up again, tears were streaming down her cheeks.
She shook her head desperately. “Why do you always think the worst of me? My aunt did talk to me—she said some woman was at your place. I panicked and rushed out to find you. I skipped the staff’s check. I never thought my own aunt would betray me.”
She scrambled out of bed, wobbling as she reached Rupert, grabbing his arm.
“Rupert, you know better than anyone how fragile I am. Would I really risk myself like that? I even warned my aunt before—told her not to pull anything. Please, just believe me, I—”
Reese’s voice rose in panic, then she clutched her chest, struggling to breathe.
