The door swung open, and Kay, seemingly fully prepared, led the crowd straight inside.
This time, there was no disappointment. Someone was indeed lying in the bed.
Judging by the length of the hair spilling over the sheets, it was definitely a woman.
Kay pretended not to notice and marched right up to pull back the covers. "Lester, are you okay? Ah! A woman!"
Her shriek of feigned terror drew everyone's eyes.
The woman in the bed seemed startled as well, instantly yanking the blanket up to wrap herself completely in its folds.
Just as Kay reached out to yank the covers down and reveal the woman's face, Lester walked out of the bathroom, drying his damp hair with a towel.
"What are you all doing in here?" he asked, his tone laced with heavy displeasure.
Reese turned to him. "Lester, are you alright? Why didn't you answer your phone?"
Lester pointed to his phone charging on the nightstand. "It's on silent."
Being on silent meant he didn't want to be disturbed.
As for what they were interrupting...
All eyes drifted back to the bed.
Lester stepped forward, blocking their view. "Please leave."
Kay smiled, adopting the tone of a magnanimous elder. "Lester, there's no need to hide. Eventually, you have to introduce her to the family. We can have our families sit down for dinner, finalize the arrangements, and make sure she's treated right."
"I'm glad you see it that way, Kay." Lester shifted his gaze to the figure huddled in the bed. "Isn't that right, Sylvia?"
Kay's smile froze instantly, her face turning a ghastly shade of pale. "Who did you say?"
"Sylvia. My girlfriend." Lester repeated, staring her down with glacial intensity.
At his words, the figure in the bed shifted. As she cautiously peeked out, she accidentally exposed a faint, unmistakable mark on her bare shoulder.
"Could you all please leave? Is it really appropriate to barge in and disturb people like this?"
"How could it be you?" Kay blurted out in utter disbelief.
Sylvia scoffed coldly. "Ms. Winslet, that's a ridiculous question. Who else would be in bed with my boyfriend besides me?"
Realizing her slip-up, Kay's lips twitched. She forced a rigid smile.
"You've been in here this entire time?"
"Where else would I be?"
Sylvia forced a light, casual tone, but beneath the thick blanket, her hands were trembling uncontrollably beneath a certain man's piercing gaze.
The memory of that crushing, agonizing pain crashed over her again, seeping into her very bones until she ached with exhaustion.
