Ethan Carter let out a sigh as he buckled Olivia’s seatbelt for her. “I’ll crank up the heat,” he offered.

“No need,” Olivia cut in quickly. “It’s just the wind outside was kind of chilly. It’s not that cold in here. Give me a couple minutes and I’ll be fine. If you turn on the heat now, I’ll be roasting in no time.”

Ethan shrugged and let it go, leaving the heater off.

He slid back into the driver’s seat and glanced out the window. Along the curb, the maple trees were tossing in the wind, and the sidewalk was littered with scattered leaves.

He pulled his gaze back inside. “It’s been windy these days. I’ll bring you a beanie tomorrow.”

“I actually meant to wear one today, but totally forgot.” Olivia blinked at him, sheepish. “Remind me tomorrow, will you?”

“Sure. Anything else you want?”

Olivia shook her head. “Nope, that’s it.”

Ethan started the car and eased them into the flow of traffic.

Olivia draped the blanket back over her lap and let out a wistful sigh. “Wouldn’t it be nice if I never had to leave the house?”

Ethan shot her a sidelong look, grinning. “You know, you could just quit your job.”

Olivia’s eyes went wide, and she surrendered with a laugh. “Alright, alright, leaving the house it is.”

She really did love her work, after all.

A day or two cooped up at home sounded cozy, but after a while she’d just get lazy and bored.

Ethan chuckled. “You know, you could always hire a few more people. Then you could take a break whenever you felt like it.”

Olivia groaned. “If only I could afford it.”

“I’ll front you the money,” Ethan said with a smirk.

Olivia burst out laughing. “So all that hard work of yours is just to plug my financial holes, huh?”

“If it makes you happy,” Ethan replied, totally serious.

Olivia grinned. She wanted to give him a big thumbs up for that one.

That was just how Ms. Bennett did things—straightforward and bold.
