Olivia Bennett looked over with concern. “Are you hungry right now?”

“I already grabbed something to eat before I came over,” Nannie Bruce replied, smiling. “I figured you’d be busy all afternoon, so I thought I’d wait until you were done before we headed out. It’ll be just about dinner time then.”

“Good thinking.”

Just as Olivia finished speaking, a couple of knocks sounded at the door.

Nannie Bruce glanced at Olivia, who was already getting to her feet. “That’ll be Susan.”

She said this over her shoulder as she moved to open the door.

“Olivia!” Susan called, balancing a Tupperware container in one hand as she stepped in.

Olivia held the door wide. “Come on in, Susan. Just set it on the table.”

Susan smiled and obliged, placing the container down.

Nannie Bruce got up and gave Susan a polite nod. She’d overheard Olivia and Helen Adams talking about Susan bringing food—she’d thought Susan was from some local restaurant. Now it clicked: Susan was one of the Carters’ people.

Olivia gestured between them. “Susan, this is my friend, Nannie Bruce.”

Nannie smiled warmly. “Hi, Susan. Nice to meet you.”

Susan looked a little surprised, flustered by the friendliness. “Ms. Bruce, if you’re Olivia’s friend, there’s no need to be so formal!”

“Then you don’t need to be formal with me, either,” Nannie replied with a laugh. “Call me Nannie, or whatever’s easiest.”

Susan giggled and nodded. “Alright. Olivia, you’d better eat while your lunch is still hot. I’ll leave you two to it.”

Olivia was about to agree, but then paused. “Wait—Susan, hold on a sec.”

Susan looked back, a little puzzled. “What’s up?”

“I won’t be home for dinner tonight, so you don’t have to prep anything for me.”
