Shirley Carter didn’t show a hint of gratitude, nor did she believe that Adelina Lane was being genuine.

“For all we know, that whole mess could’ve been her doing,” she muttered.

Daisy Dale raised an eyebrow. “I seriously doubt it.”

She wasn’t naive enough to get fooled by something like that. It had just been a random incident, and if Catherine Blair hadn’t blurted out the wrong thing at the wrong time, nothing would’ve happened afterward.

“How can you be so sure?” Shirley pressed, her eyes locked on Daisy, face tense with emotion. “You’re still young. You don’t understand how ruthless she can be. She’ll do anything—anything—to get what she wants.”

“You really think she’s being nice to you for no reason? If she didn’t want something from you, she’d never even look your way. Just stay away from her, Daisy. As far as you can.”

“Trust me, Daisy, I’m your mother. I’m the only one in this world who truly wants what’s best for you. I would never hurt you.”

She reached out, trying to grab Daisy’s arm again.

Daisy instinctively pulled back.

Shirley’s hand hung awkwardly in the air for a moment, her face frozen in confusion. She stared at Daisy, her voice suddenly small and defeated. “You don’t trust me anymore. You won’t even let me touch you...”

Her words were barely more than a whisper, but they landed heavy on Daisy’s chest.

“No, it’s not that.” Daisy shook her head, rubbing her arm. “You just grabbed me a little too hard earlier, that’s all. I was scared you’d hurt me again. That’s why I pulled away.”

Shirley’s eyes brightened just a bit, anxiety flickering across her face. “So… you don’t hate me?”

Daisy shook her head again.

Maybe everything Shirley had ever told her about Adelina Lane was wrong. Maybe, to Lance Carter and the others, Shirley seemed completely unreasonable. But there was one thing Daisy couldn’t deny—her mother’s love for her was real.
