Just as I put everything back in place, the bathroom door opened.
Mark walked out, toweling his wet hair.
When he saw me sitting on the bed, he paused.
"Honey, why aren't you asleep yet? It's so late."
His voice was still as gentle as ever.
I looked up, my gaze meeting his.
In that moment.
Tears welled up uncontrollably.
As if my emotions had finally found an outlet.
Mark panicked when he saw me crying.
He rushed to my side, eyes full of concern:
"Honey, why are you crying? Did you have a nightmare? You shouldn't cry during postpartum recovery, it can cause complications."
His movements were so gentle.
If I hadn't seen those messages with my own eyes, I would have believed his concern was genuine.
Apparently, love can be acted out so convincingly.
I stared at him with red-rimmed eyes, my voice slightly shaking:
"Babe, I just dreamed that you were cheating on me."
Mark froze for a second, then let out a soft laugh and pulled me into his arms.
"Silly, dreams mean the opposite. You might as well have dreamed I died."
I clenched my fists so hard my nails dug into my palms, but still pretended to joke:
"Babe, I'm fat and ugly now. Do you still love me?"
Mark released me, cupped my face in his hands, his eyes intense.
Then he leaned down and placed a reverent kiss on my forehead.
"My wife will always be the most beautiful woman in the world. Besides, you're the one I chased for ten years. How could I not love you?"
It's true.
Mark pursued me for ten years.
He would even give me a kidney if I needed one.
I would have believed pigs could fly before believing Mark would cheat.
Yet, the truth was that cruel.
Those chat messages were like thorns, piercing deep into my heart, making me bleed.
I looked into his eyes and said, word by word:
"Babe, if you really cheated on me, would you rather die?"
A flicker of unease crossed his expression.
But he quickly composed himself.
"I would die before I cheated."
I finally smiled.
Mark.
That's what you said.
At midnight.
Mark gently tapped my face, calling tentatively:
"Honey? Honey?"
I kept my eyes closed, feigning deep sleep.
Even adding light snores.
Mark paused for quite a while, as if making sure I was really asleep.
Only then did he carefully climb out of bed, moving cautiously to avoid waking me.
After confirming he'd left, I opened my eyes and checked the time.
1 AM.
Mark was really ‘dedicated', going to meet his lover at this hour.
I took my phone, quietly got up, and followed him.
Soon.
I would have all the cheated evidence I needed.
But to my surprise, Mark didn't leave the house but turned toward the guest room.
The guest room was the baby's room.
My heart jumped.
Had my testing tonight made Mark change his plans?
The next second.
I realized Mark was far more disgusting than I'd imagined.
