"You're going to be okay," Dominic insisted. "I'm going to take care of you."
"I really am sorry, Dominic," I told him sincerely.
He hugged me even tighter, letting me nuzzle into his throat again. "You were always forgiven. We are mates, even though you try to deny it. I marked you and I want what is best for you. I also want you, but that can wait for now."
"Why did you choose me?" I asked him. "And none of that 'I was entertaining' nonsense."
Dominic gazed up at me, running his fingers through my hair as he was deep in thought. "There is a lot I could say, Cara. You are entertaining because you're different. You didn't see me just as a title. But as a person, even if you think I'm a 'dickwad'. Which I was. And there are times when I probably will be a dickwad again, but I am trying to be better. I want to be better for you. And I have never met anyone that has made me want to change. That says a lot."
I examined his face, searching for any sign of deception. "There's more to it than that, isn't there?" I asked.
He nodded. "There's always more. But there is time for that later. Let's do this walk first."
I took off my shoes once we were on the sand, about to go towards where the waves lapped at the sand. Dominic grasped my hand tightly, pulling me into his side. "Later," he told me.
"Is this where you kill me?" I asked suspiciously, eyeing the side of the beach he was taking me to. There were lots of rocks and cove-like structures. So if anyone were on the more public-friendly side, it'd be hard to see people.
"If I were ever thinking about killing you, it was when I pulled you out of that river," he claimed. "You were driving me nuts that day."
"I don't always do that?"
Dominic smacked my rear end hard, making me jerk forward in surprise and pain. "You do, but in different ways."
"Don't hit me there," I grumbled, rubbing the sore spot.
He laughed, wagging his head. "Only when you're naughty, sugar."
I quickly followed, nearly hitting my head as the cave dipped low just before it opened up. I started to curse out the rocks when hands scooped me forward and up. Dominic held me close to his chest, his hands resting on my lower back.
"Did you hit your head?" he asked seriously. I could vaguely make out his features in the darkness, but there was some light source above him. I shook my head, looking up at his eyes. Why were they glowing so much? "Look around, kitten."
My eyes followed his gaze up, where a single beam of light shone in from the top of the cave. It bounces off of the moist walls until it hit a soft pale blue crystal-like structure, where it fragmented off in a hundred different directions. Several of those lights hit other crystals, casting different colors across all of the interior cave.
Dominic lowered his head to the skin just below my ear, kissing me there softly. "My parents used to come here to get away from their responsibilities. It was their sacred place, a safe spot away from the roles of King and Queen. When I was born, we would come here almost weekly and just talk. Say everything we can't say in public, even at home. Once I came of age to find a mate, they requested that I bring mine here and share it."
His hands moved to mine momentarily, setting them around his shoulders before returning them to their place. His kisses trailed down to my throat, his mark. The feeling sent a jolt down my body and I subconsciously pressed up against him. "It's beautiful," I told him.
"It won't be here for much longer," he said. "Our children might not see it."
"How come?" I whispered.
