As a human, I wasn't ever invited, mostly because I wasn't friends with any of the people who were holding the fancy celebrations. I watched a couple from my bedroom window, but all I saw was the couple making a toast with one of the pack Elders by their side and a lot of good food being eaten.
Dominic's hand squeezed mine, catching my attention. My gaze moved from my cup of tea to his face, which was relaxed. "Cara, you were asked a question," he said evenly.
"Oh, I'm sorry," I replied a little too quickly. "What did you ask?"
There were three people sent to help us: two women and a man. All of them appeared to be over sixty, the man having completely white hair. One of the women, who had a beautiful dark skin tone, had two white streaks through her thick black hair, framing her heart-shaped face delicately. She looked ethereal, like she could be some type of Fae. Her name was Ida, but her last name was too difficult for me to even attempt pronouncing, and she was the most experienced of the three and so was leading the discussion.
The second woman was what some people would describe as average. She was of medium height, not too tall or too short, and had a round face with deep chocolate eyes. Her hair was a mousy brown and seemed to naturally fall straight. This was Laura, the second most experienced. She seemed very snooty though, and hadn't bothered to look at me since I first shook her hand.
Ida gave me a gentle, warm smile. "It's alright. This is a lot to take in, I'm sure. I asked you what type of gown you'd prefer to wear. It will be made using the royal colors in silky fabrics, but the style is up to you," she explained.
"Um... I'm not sure. Do you mind if I draw it? It might be better drawn than explained," I told her. I didn't know any terminology for dresses or fashion at all for that matter, so our best bet would be my doodles.
Dominic volunteered to grab some, giving the top of my head a swift kiss as he stood. I thanked him with a smile, watching as he exited.
As soon as he was gone, I knew it was a mistake.
"Sweetheart, we do not want to create a beautiful ceremony for someone that A) is not prepared for it," Ida claimed, ticking off her fingers as she went. "And B) will not enjoy the grandeur of it. No offense, but it is a waste of all of our time. We want you to want this, Cara. Do you?"
Ida folded her arms across her chest as she gazed fiercely between the two of us. "Are you two absolutely sure you are ready to go through with this? That there isn't anything that should keep us from moving forward?" she said tensely.
I didn't move, hardly even breathed. Instead, Dominic was going to be the one to make the ultimate decision. I was tired of decision-making, and so far today my decisions had landed me in some bad spots. So maybe it was time for me to take a step back from it.
Dominic looked at me for a long time, his eyes scrutinizing every inch of my body, which seemed to last hours for me. Until finally, he gave his answer.
"Yes, actually, there is," he claimed.
Everyone's head snapped to look at him, even mine. Obviously, no one was expecting Dominic to object. Just me. Especially since Dominic had been the one to set this meeting up and to come up with the idea for the ceremony date. Literally, he had done everything so far. Everything that would lead one to believe he wanted this.
