Shortly following this part of the story, Caroline finished her meal and I decided that it was best we finish it in the bedroom. The bed was fitted with new, specialized sheets that were made to keep you cool. I had a couple maids see to it while we ate. It must have been doing its job, because Cara fell onto the bed with a content sigh.
"Keep going," she murmured to me, in response to my story.
I smiled warmly at her, sitting next to her, but not touching her. "We would track a deer for hours at a time and when we were in position for me to shoot, I would miss every time. Every. Single. Time. It would fly just inches above their head or yards away."
Caroline giggled. "I bet that hurt your young alpha pride," she teased.
"It did. By the third day, I was so angry that my body shook and my aim got even worse. My father was starting to get angry with me as well, on top of my already wounded pride. 'How will you be a successful King and mate if you can't even hunt for your own food?' he would ask. At sundown of the day three, I ventured off on my own. Mostly to cool my rage, but brought my bow and arrow for target practice." I began to stroke Caroline's hair, seeing as her eyes were beginning to get heavy. The painkillers she took after eating were strong and tended to make the user drowsy, which was fortunate for her. I knew playing with her hair and speaking softly to her would also help her fall asleep, which is exactly what she needed. "I stormed through the trees, pretty much throwing a massive tantrum, when I spotted a small buck only yards away. He picked his head up, looked right at me, stared for about thirty seconds, before lowering his head to chew on the tall grass and shrubs. Even as I lifted my bow to kill him, the animal didn't startle or even appear bothered. You know what I did, sugar?"
"Let him go?" she asked softly.
I shook my head. "No. I released the arrow." The girl got a hurt look on her face before it dissolved into a yawn. "The arrow sunk into the ground at its feet. It had been three days since my father and I had a good meal. On these hunting trips, he required we only eat what we could catch. So besides granola bars and trail mix, I hadn't eaten anything. I was weakening. So weak, that my instincts snapped into control and I shifted. When I awoke, my father was cooking the remains of the buck over the fire, I was covered in blood, and my clothes were gone. My survival instincts had forced me to become a wolf and get us the meat we needed. I thought my father would be livid, since I didn't use the bow. Instead, he patted my shoulder, handed me a new set of clothing, and praised my fine work. When I killed the animal, I didn't rip it to shreds. I humanely and quickly killed it and brought it back to camp."
Caroline's eyes were closed, but her face was twisted into a pained, disgusted expression. "I don't like this story, Dom."
"It is my truth, sugar. I am only trying to show you how strong instincts can be. That was the first and last time I have been completely out of control like that, so there is no need to be worried about that," I explained.
"That poor deer."
"I am the deer, Caroline."
"Yes, sire, I know. I would not be here if it weren't important," he assured me.
"So? What is it?" I asked, stepping outside and shutting the door behind me.
Jeff sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Alpha... I need to move the date of the Challenge forward."
I stared at him in shock. "Excuse me? It is only a week and a half away."
He nodded hurriedly. "I know. My Nina... she is pregnant," he confessed. "Our doctor has confirmed there are some abnormalities in her hormonal levels and he is worried for the safety of the fetus. We are being sent to a specialist next weekend and if we wait any longer, there is a possibility of losing it."
