A light at the end of the tunnel. The next morning, I took an ice bath. The effects of which lasted almost an hour, where I was able to eat breakfast, clean up the bedroom a bit, and take some ibuprofen for the aches.
After showering and cleaning, Alfie even came in and said that the scent of the heat had lessened. But the real test was seeing Dominic, who I could feel was becoming restless through the bond.
In all honesty, I missed him too. As wild and possibly toxic as our relationship had been at the beginning, he had been my support the last little while and I trusted him. Which is what made being away from him difficult. Not to mention the bond wanted us together.
The mixture of those two factors made the distance between us painful.
Andrew peaked his head in the bedroom door. "Are you sure you're ready for him? We don't want to mess this up on the last day of your heat."
I wagged my head. "That's why you're here. To keep us safe. I just... I miss him and want to see him," I said assuredly. "You know how it is with a mate."
Andrew gazed over at Alfie, who was making the bed for me. At the sight of him, Andrew's eyes softened and he sighed dreamily. "Yeah. Yeah, I do."
Blame the heat, but my eyes started to water and I helplessly threw my arms around him in a tight embrace. He stiffened up and sputtered in confusion. "Cara, what is going on?"
"I'm just so happy that you two are happy," I cried. "I shipped it so hard and I just wanted Alfie to have someone protect him and you two are just so perfect together and I'm an emotional wreck because of this week and-"
"What did you do to my girl, Andrew?" Dominic asked playfully.
Andrew patted my head awkardly, pushing me off of him. "I broke her with my love for Alfred, apparently. But technically you did this to her."
Dominic caught my gaze and smiled softly. "Hey, beautiful."
Damn that man. A blush filled my cheeks, like I was a stupid school girl with a crush on an upperclassman. "Do I still stink?"
"You smell as good as ever," Dom teased. "Am I okay to hug you or are we going to start stripping each other?"
Andrew and Alfie gagged in unison. "Do not! I hate heterosexual porn," Alfie gushed.
But I suppose that's how we are similar.
I lifted Dominic's face up so we were eye to eye. "Don't leave me again, okay?" I murmured.
"I promise."
"And don't make me do something this crazy again."
He chuckled, leaning in to kiss me. "I promise, sugar."
The next day, my body seemed to be correcting itself again. Though my body ached as if I had ran a marathon, I felt good enough to not only be with Dominic, but to go out to lunch with him, Andrew, and Alfie. All of whom reported that I wasn't as smelly and that it could be mostly covered up with some perfume and a fresh change of clothes.
It must have been a popular day to go to the diner though, as many people from Dom's pack were there. Mostly middle-aged couples, who greeted Dominic warmly and welcomed Andrew back, but didn't say a word to me. Instead, I received forced and polite smiles.
