The King spread his arms wide and addressed the crowd of people gathered in the throne room, "Would all of you like to hear this pup's story?"
People shifted uncomfortably where they stood. Some were used to watching the King and his narrowed minded bullying ways. Others had not yet been exposed and thought the game had gone too far. Some in the crowd though cheered. Those who were similar to the King. Those who took pleasure in the discomfort of others.
The King snapped his fingers at Fayette. "Tell us pup. What hardships have you faced?" He smiled from above. "Spin it in as pitiful a way as you want to."
Fayette took a deep breath and walked to Alto.
"Running away?" One man from the crowd jeered. The King, however, silenced him with a growl and watched the girl and his son.
Fayette took Alto's hand and traced the palm lines. "I'm sorry you have to find out like this," she whispered.
Prince August said nothing. No flash of emotion crossed his eyes. All he did was pull Fayette closer to him and kiss her forehead. Then leaning down, he bumped his nose to hers and nodded.
Many people gasped. Even Fayette was surprised by the amount of affection he had shown to her in public. But it was the courage she needed. It was the strength that she had to have to stand in front of the King and tell a crowd of strangers her life story.
The King smiled down at her.
The Queen looked grim. She nodded at Fayette, trying to offer whatever silent encouragement she could.
Fayette took a deep breath and started.
"When I was nine I watched my mother die." Several people laughed nervously in the room, but a sudden tension filled the air. The King did not move his eyes from Fayette.
"She was sick. For months I watched as she faded. Then one morning she was gone."
"Then I watched my father go crazy."
The room sank to a chill. No one moved. No one talked.
Fayette shuddered as the memories slowly rose to the surface. Memories she had for years repressed.
"He didn't remember me. Instead, every time he saw me, he saw my mother. He would call me by her name, hold me as if I were her. Nothing could break him from his craze."
Now was the moment of truth. Fayette looked at Alpha Bruno. He stared at her with regret and sadness in his eyes. He knew what was coming. A truth he wanted no one to know.
"I developed x-bane." The room exploded with gasps and cries.
"Silence!" the King yelled, but chaos still encompassed the room.
No one could comprehend it.
"I made enough X-Bane for him to overdose. I gave him enough to make his heart stop."
The room was silent.
The king said nothing.
Fayette shook all over. She forced her eyes not to steal a glance at Alto. She was too scared. Too scared to see the expression that he would hold.
"Alpha Bruno had to abide by the law and demoted me to an Omega because of my crime. And at the age of fourteen, I became an Omega."
"Fourteen?" The king hissed. The King turned to his son and said to him, "Your life mate murdered someone when she was 14?!"
Alto said nothing. Everyone held their breath as he walked up to his life mate. The trembling girl, who still managed to stand up straight. The one whom you would have never guess went through so much pain. The one who now had people slowly backing away from her. As people now held in their eyes a new look, one that she was not accustomed to seeing in others when directed onto her- fear.
And there Prince August stopped. In front of such a girl.
Without saying a word, he held open his arms.
The trembling figure could not help the sob that escaped from her mouth, as she walked into his waiting embrace.
