“I am the woman Chase married,” Althea replied without hesitation. “Our wedding photos are still displayed in the living room. Haven’t you seen them? I hope you do-because they are proof that I am the only woman he married. You are not.”

The room fell into sudden silence.

“You were merely a woman who once passed through his life,” Althea continued, her voice steady and unwavering. “And your presence in this house is not a matter of right-it’s an act of mercy.”

Selena burst out laughing. “Mercy?” She stepped closer. “Don’t pretend to be righteous, Althea. If I hadn’t been pregnant-if I hadn’t given birth to Eli and fought for her rights-do you really think this family would care about her?”

“That is precisely why you should think clearly,” Althea replied coldly. “Use your head rationally. If not for your child, you would never have set foot in this house. And even now, you’re here only because of the Miller family’s mercy.”

“Let go of me, you bastard!”

“I have a name,” Josh said with a thin, dangerous smile. “But unfortunately, I have no interest in being acquainted with you, Mrs. Ward.”

“Josh,” Althea warned softly. “That’s enough.”

“No,” Josh replied, glancing at his mother. “Anyone who intends to harm you will answer to me. I won’t hesitate.”

The servants who had gathered nearby waited in tense silence, watching Josh closely. None of them had ever seen him like this-his expression flat, his stare colder than ice. His blue eyes looked like a frozen ocean, his face flushed as he held back his fury.

“Prepare breakfast for the guest,” Josh ordered coldly. “Make sure she eats it in her room. Do not allow her to roam freely. A guest has limits in a host’s home.”

He released his grip abruptly.

The force sent Selena stumbling, nearly knocking her off balance.

Selena growled under her breath. “Eli is your granddaughter too, Mr. Miller.”

“That may be true-if the facts confirm it,” Nathan replied evenly. “I’m still verifying them. For now, you’re allowed to stay here as you wish. But if you make my home uncomfortable, then as a guest, you should be the one to leave. Isn’t that, right?”

Eli watched the scene with tears pooling in her eyes. Her body trembled. Just that morning, she had planned to greet Josh and Riana, maybe even start a conversation with Althea. But everything had fallen apart like this, before anyone had even touched the food on the dining table.

“Mom,” she whispered.

Selena turned toward Eli, her breathing still uneven. For a moment, it looked as though she might unleash her anger on whoever stood closest. But Eli’s expression, frightened, wounded, and anxious-made her hold back.

“Come on. We’re going back.”

“What did you say?” Selena snapped, staring at Eli in disbelief. She had been struggling to restrain herself—and now Eli was saying go back?

“We’ll go back to our room,” Eli said softly, offering a sad smile. Then she bowed slightly.
