Three days after arriving in Hong Kong, Naomi’s fever had finally broken completely.

Her body still tired easily, but color had begun to return to her once-pale face. The room prepared for her was on the eastern side of the mansion, overlooking a wide garden with a small pond and carefully arranged trees. Every morning, sunlight poured through the tall windows, touching the wooden floors and sheer curtains with a quiet warmth.

It was far too peaceful a place for someone accustomed to living on guard.

Naomi sat on the small balcony, holding a cup of tea, when Lydia arrived carrying a tray filled with sliced fruit and medicine.

“You keep staring at that garden like you’re counting every flower petal out there,” Lydia said as she sat across from her.

“I’m making sure all of this is real.”

“Unfortunately, it is. And you still need to take your medicine.”

Naomi sighed. “I’m starting to suspect you enjoy this.”

“Of course I do.” Lydia nudged the fruit plate toward her. “Taking care of someone is much more pleasant than dealing with my husband.”

“Poor him.”

“No. He deserves it.”

Naomi laughed softly.

It came easier now, no longer feeling strange on her own lips.

The days that followed passed in peace. Lydia appeared at nearly every mealtime, bringing new stories, family gossip, or insisting Naomi walk through the gardens so her strength would return. Through those light conversations, Naomi gradually learned a little about the Miller family.

She learned that Cale was not a man who stayed still for long. Half his life seemed filled with meetings, business trips, and decisions that set countless people in motion. She learned that Lydia had married him after a life that had been anything but simple. She also learned that their family was large, complicated, and fiercely protective of one another in their own ways.

Even so, Naomi was certain of one thing.

Their family was full of love.

“So… do you actually work too?” Naomi asked one afternoon.

“Of course.” Lydia answered casually. “But I postponed a few Hong Kong projects. Maybe next week I’ll

be busy again. Most of my unfinished work is still back in SunCity.”

“Don’t tell me you postponed it because of me.” Naomi looked troubled, guilt written plainly across her

face.

“Oh, please. Of course not.” Lydia laughed. “I’m just not used to working here yet. I still need time to adjust.”

Naomi lowered her eyes to her teacup. “I think I need to start figuring out how to find a job here. I can’t keep living like this forever.”

“We wouldn’t mind,” Lydia replied lightly.

Naomi looked at her in surprise, then gave a quiet laugh.

“Unfortunately, I’m the one who minds accepting your kindness over and over.”

“You should discuss that with Cale too,” Lydia said, as if it were obvious. “For some reason, I feel like he’d want to know what your plans are while you’re in Hong Kong.”

Naomi fell quiet for a long moment after Lydia said that.

The woman was right.

No matter how she looked at it, Cale had helped pull her out of the nightmare that had been haunting her. Why had Falcon gone that far over a debt? At first, Naomi had believed it was simply the price of getting entangled with Don Falcon, but…

The longer she thought about it, the less sense it made.

“Yes, I’ll tell Mr. Miller what I plan to do from now on,” Naomi said with a small smile. “Thank you for helping me this much.”

That afternoon, Lydia’s phone rang.

Her face brightened the instant she saw the name on the screen.

“Althea.”

Naomi smiled faintly. “The one you’re always talking about?”

Without hesitation, Lydia nodded and accepted the video call. The face of a beautiful, elegant woman immediately appeared on the screen.

“So you finally answered,” Althea said. “I called three times.”

“Really?” Lydia looked puzzled. “Um… maybe the signal?”

“I thought you were busy,” Althea replied, her tone softer now.

Lydia laughed under her breath. “What do you want?”

“I wanted to make sure you’re all right.”
