When the car stopped in the mall’s parking area, Lydia stepped out first. She paused for a second, unconsciously scanning her surroundings. People moved back and forth, footsteps blending with the sounds of car doors opening and closing.

Nothing seemed out of place.

And yet, something about it made her slightly uneasy.

“What is it?” Naomi called from the other side of the car.

Lydia turned quickly and shook her head, slipping an arm around Naomi’s shoulders. “Nothing. Come on.”

She brushed the feeling aside and walked in with Naomi. Cool air from inside the building greeted them, a stark contrast to the lingering warmth outside.

“It’s pretty crowded,” Naomi said, glancing around.

“It’s one of the larger shopping centers here in Hong Kong,” Lydia replied.

They wandered through several stores, choosing a phone that would suit Naomi. She began to relax a little, though hesitation still flickered now and then whenever she had to make a choice. A newly released phone now rested in her hands, though she clearly felt uneasy about it. It was too expensive, too out of place in her grasp.

But Lydia said casually, “Isn’t that model popular among girls your age?”

Naomi looked at the phone, her expression conflicted. “Yes, it is… but… is it really okay for me to have this?”

“Why wouldn’t it be?” Lydia laughed. “Are you worried Cale will get angry?”

Naomi felt as though Lydia could read her thoughts. Ever since they stepped into the phone store, the only thing lingering in her mind had been Cale’s reaction.

“Don’t worry,” Lydia said cheerfully. She held out a black card with Cale’s name embossed on it. “I’m paying with his card. There’s no way he’ll scold me.”

Naomi let out a long breath, her fingers tightening around the paper bag that held her brand-new phone. “Thank you, Lydia. You’re really kind.”

Lydia smiled brightly. “Of course.”

After buying the phone, she led Naomi to a bookstore, just as she had mentioned earlier.

“If there’s anything else you want,” Lydia said as they paused in front of the store, “just tell me.”

Naomi turned to her quickly. “Really?”

“Yes.” Lydia reached for a book from the shelf. “And about work, I think Cale will figure something out. He has plenty of connections. We can find something that won’t just fill your time, but actually mean something to you.’

Naomi fell quiet for a moment. “Will he allow it?”

Lydia closed the book in her hands calmly. “He won’t hold someone back without a clear reason.”

They stepped deeper into the bookstore. The familiar scent of paper and ink filled the air, wrapping the space in a quiet calm.

“Where did you study before?” Lydia asked, scanning the shelves.

“I went to school in a small town, not in Berlin,” Naomi replied softly. “It’s called Quedlinburg. Not many people know it.” She paused briefly before adding, “But I wasn’t there long.”

Something in her tone made Lydia stop herself from asking more. She simply nodded, recognizing the boundary that didn’t need to be crossed.
