"Damn it... damn it!"

Silas gritted his teeth as he poured what little antiseptic solution he had over the wound. A searing pain shot straight to the bone, forcing him to clench his fist so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

But what disturbed him even more than the pain was his left leg. He tried moving his foot—there was almost no response. He tried again, with the same result.

His expression slowly changed. For the first time since managing to escape, his confidence wavered. "That bullet," he murmured quietly. "It hit a nerve."

He let out a harsh breath, then slammed his fist against the wooden floor beside him. "Cale!" The name escaped together with the hatred he had harbored all this time. "That bastard."

It wasn't only Cale who made him curse. The image of Jasper that surfaced in his mind also made Silas spit out another string of profanities. The man who had once always stood behind him had now become the very reason all of his plans had fallen apart.

"And you, Jasper..." Silas's jaw tightened. "Traitor."

He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to calm the anger that was beginning to consume his thoughts. In just a matter of days, everything had changed so quickly. His men had scattered. One by one, the hideouts he had spent years building had been discovered. The people who had once obeyed him without question were now disappearing without a word.

"Useless!" The curse slipped quietly from his lips. Whether it was directed at his men or at himself, even he didn't know.

A few minutes later, Silas pulled a folded map from the small bag he was carrying. He spread it out on the floor and illuminated it with the beam of his flashlight. His finger traced the mountain range until it reached the least-used border crossing.

"Tomorrow morning," he muttered to himself, "I'll find a signal and contact my old people. They'll come get me, and we'll put the next plan into motion."

If everything went according to plan, he would be out of this state before sunset. Once he reached a new territory, Cale's people would no longer be able to find him so easily.

The thought restored a measure of his composure. Silas picked up his phone again.

He tried calling the one person from whom he still hadn't heard a single word.

Falcon.
