Now... he was the prey.

He looked up. In the dim beam of a flashlight cutting through the room, the figure of a man slowly emerged from the shadows.

Silas narrowed his eyes. The face was unmistakably familiar. And the instant he realized who was standing before him, his eyes widened.

"Jasper?"

The man stood tall a few steps away from him. His left arm was still wrapped in a thin bandage, visible beneath his dark jacket. The gunshot wound that had yet to fully heal made his movements slightly stiffer, but the pistol aimed at Silas remained perfectly steady. There was no longer any trace of the hesitation that had once shown in his eyes.

Behind Jasper, one armed figure after another silently entered the house. They spread out to every corner of the room, making certain there was no escape route left for Silas.

Silas let out a quiet laugh. It sounded hoarse, more like forced mockery than triumph.

"So," Silas wiped the blood trickling from the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand, then gave a faint smile even though his breathing was still ragged. His eyes never left Jasper's face. "The dog I raised has finally bitten its own master."

His words hung in the air, laden with the same mockery that had, for years, always been enough to make his subordinates lower their heads.

But this time was different.

Not the slightest change appeared on Jasper's face. The pistol in his hand remained aimed squarely at Silas's chest. His gaze was calm, yet sharp enough to make it clear that he no longer regarded the man before him as someone worthy of respect.

"Since when did I become your dog?" Jasper replied flatly. His jaw tightened. "You're far too full of yourself."

Silas let out a low chuckle, though every vibration of his laughter sent another throb through the wound in his thigh.

"I raised you." His gaze brimmed with contempt. "I taught you how to survive. I gave you a place when so many people doubted you. Without me..." He paused briefly, shaking his head. "You would have been nobody."

Jasper let out a slow breath. Strangely, there wasn't the slightest trace of anger on his face. "You're right."
