Lydia lowered her head.

She knew Cale always tried to appear strong in front of everyone. While they were dealing with Silas, he never allowed fear to take control of him. But now, when everything was over and it was just the two of them, Lydia could see the wounds he had been hiding all this time.

Lydia slowly moved closer, then embraced him. Cale fell silent for a moment before finally returning the embrace with both arms. Lydia rested her face against his chest, listening to the heartbeat of the man who had always tried to be the safest place for her.

"I'm still here," she said softly. "And this time, I won't leave."

Cale closed his eyes. His hand gently stroked Lydia's back.

"Promise?"

After that conversation, the atmosphere in the mansion felt much calmer. After dinner, Lydia lay in bed while Cale sat beside her. The bedroom lights had been deliberately dimmed. There was no talk of work or family. There was only the sound of their breathing and, occasionally, the sound of the wind beyond the window.

"Looks like she's sleeping."

Cale looked at Lydia's stomach for a few moments. Then, without saying anything, he moved closer and carefully placed his palm there.

Lydia held back a smile. "What are you doing?"

"Talking."

"To whom?"

Cale looked at her as though the question made no sense. "Our child."

Lydia immediately let out a small laugh. "They're not even born yet. How could they possibly understand?"

"I don't care," Cale said seriously.

"Are you serious?"

"Serious." Cale leaned down slightly. "I want our child to recognize my voice from now on."

Lydia laughed again, but this time her eyes began to well up. There was something so simple about the sight that her heart felt full. Cale, a man who had always been known for being so tough and difficult to approach, was now talking to a baby who could not even answer him yet.

"Then what do you want to say?"
