I walked to the nearest hotel and crashed the moment I hit the bed.

The next morning, I headed straight to work.

I was late.

The firm was prestigious.

Alexander was the founder.

I was just another lawyer.

The moment I sat down, John from the next cubicle smirked.

"You seriously skipped the all-hands meeting? Boss's orders?"

I smiled.

Alexander never waited for me.

Why should I wait for him?

The morning was light.

I finished my work, then opened my laptop and started drafting a divorce agreement.

Alexander's voice cut in out of nowhere.

"You're my wife, but you sure don't act like it."

"Throwing a fit, staying out all night—what exactly are you trying to prove?"

I nodded absently, focused on my screen, and replied offhandedly, "Relax. It won't happen again."

Because soon, there wouldn't be a next time.

Once the divorce was finalized, he could go his way, and I'd go mine.

He hesitated for a second, as if about to throw out some snarky remark—but held back.

Instead, he said, "Let's have dinner tonight."

Then his gaze flickered to my screen.

"Since when do you take divorce cases?"

I went to the restaurant alone.

I ordered wine, steak, and two servings of their signature roast pigeon—my favorite.

And I ate both.

I used to wait for him before starting my meal.

But after years of waiting, I'd grown used to starving.

Alexander never showed up.

And for once, I wasn't even mad.

I'd waited for him for five years.

And I was done.

By the time he finally saw the divorce papers—

He'd realize they were for us.
