Suddenly, a sharp, tiny prick of pain radiated from his elbow. Combined with Honora’s words, the horrifying truth crashed down on him: she was injecting him. With a drug that would keep him in a coma.

He couldn’t believe it. The sweet, innocent Honora he had cherished and protected was doing this to him. An agonizing sense of betrayal ripped through him. He fought to move, to rise, to confront her, but his body was completely paralyzed. All he could do was lie there, helpless, as his world fell apart.

After she finished, Honora leaned back in her chair, letting out a long sigh of relief.

That was it. As long as Leopold never woke up, her secrets were safe.

A moment later, confident he was unconscious, she dialed a number and put the phone on speaker.

“Make sure you get rid of the person investigating me,” she commanded, her voice cold and imperious, a stark contrast to her usual gentle tone.

“Don’t worry, my dear daughter,” a sycophantic man’s voice replied. “The people I’ve hired this time won’t fail. They’ll make sure he never threatens you again.”

“I told you, don’t call me daughter!”

“Right, right, Ms. Judson,” the man corrected himself hastily. “So, about the payment…”

“You’re pathetic! I’ll have two hundred thousand sent to you tomorrow!”

“Thank you, thank you!”

Three small snakes emerged from a corner behind her closet.

“I won’t be back tonight. You’ll have to find your own dinner.”

Shadow and Snowy nodded and slithered toward the window. Sage, however, stayed put, nudging Shadow with its tail. Larissa chuckled. Sage was trying to get its siblings to bring it back a meal.

After closing the feed, she saw a message from Torrin.

[I’ve thought about it. It’s okay if you don’t want children. I’ll still marry you. I can find someone else to have a child for me, but you will be the only one with the title. No other woman deserves it.]
