For the next two days, Kathleen tried to contact her husband, but his phone was either turned off or unreachable.

In a fit of rage, she smashed two phones at home.

The servants all walked on eggshells around her, terrified of becoming the target of her fury.

Kathleen opened it, confused.

"Mr. Sullivan asked me to give this to you," the assistant replied in a strictly professional tone.

"Go back and tell Teague that if he wants a divorce, he can come talk to me himself! What's the point of sending papers? Does he really think I'll sign them?"

"Very well, I will relay your message to Mr. Sullivan." The assistant calmly picked up the papers she had thrown in his face, turned, and left.

The moment he was gone, a flicker of panic crossed Kathleen's face.

She immediately called Corley and explained the situation.

"...Your father wants to divorce me!"

On the other end, Corley was calm.

He waited for her to finish venting before speaking slowly. "Okay, I understand."

"I'm sorry, Mom. I can't make Dad's decisions for him."

"You—whose side are you on?! What was the point of raising you? Don't you realize that if your father and I divorce, your own interests will be damaged? If he marries someone else and has other children, they'll be taking food right off your plate! Are you really okay with that?!"

Corley's expression turned serious. "Mom, you don't need to explain the pros and cons to me. I've already thought about all of that. But it doesn't matter what I think. I can't interfere with what Dad decides to do."

"You've been married to him for decades; you should know his temper. Once he's made up his mind, there's no turning back. You should understand that better than anyone."

Kathleen's face went deathly pale. She had just managed to steady herself, but now she swayed on her feet again.

"So… I'm just supposed to let him abandon me?" she whispered to herself.

"Decades of marriage… Why? Why is he suddenly bringing up divorce?! Is it because of Aberdeen?! It's her again! It's always her! Why won't she just disappear?!"

Corley said, "You might not believe this, but Dad never mentioned any intention of divorcing you to me before this."

"...You mean, he kept it a secret even from you?"

"I don't know."
