When I got home and opened the door, a pungent smell filled the house.

It was covered up by the scent of incense that had been deliberately lit, but no man could be unfamiliar with this smell.

Manuela was wearing a loose-fitting nightgown and working in the kitchen.

When she saw me, she smiled sweetly and brought two bowls of tomato and egg noodles to the table.

"Honey, I made this for you. Try it."

Manuela couldn’t cook. She didn’t want to learn. She hated the oiliness of the kitchen and didn’t want the smoke to ruin her delicate skin.

So when we were at home, I cooked.

Looking at the obvious effort she was making, my heart remained unmoved.

"Just put it down."

I dragged my luggage to the bedroom. Manuela followed me, and began to act cute again. "Honey, I'm sorry, I didn't go to the hospital to see Mom on purpose. The intern's dog suddenly ran away, and we couldn’t find it. It’s been his pet for years. It’s like his family. He was so sad and not doing well mentally, so I helped him look for it."
