Finally, Susan put down her papers.

She slid her reading glasses up her nose and said, “Since both companies are at war, any idiot would know what was up if we sent Roxy to get close to Laurence.

“Laurence wouldn’t let Roxy near him. The plan might work only when both companies work together without any conflict.”

Manny stopped talking.

Susan had a point.

A while later, Manny said, “Momma, even if I pretend to play nice and offer a partnership, Laurence is not going to jump on board. He wants to crush us, replace us, and absorb us.

“Yes, I believe he’s the kid from way back then. With the huge feud between us, he won’t agree to a truce.”

Manny said bitterly, “He’s a total nightmare.”

Tony set his antique down and remarked, “Take a look at the openings in the branch offices and see what positions suit the family. Give them a cushy job and amp up the perks. That way, Laurence can’t buy them off.

“Hold onto power, but give the family something to live by. They whine about your incompetence and hope for Laurence to be a Longbottom, all because they want something out of it.

“The mysterious force doesn’t interfere much, though. There’s no denying that Laurence is under their protection. Still, many of my plans over the years were ruined because of them. I suspect that is where Laurence got his bodyguards from.”

Manny said with concern, “In that case, we might end up like the Jenburg Fishers. Everything we built in the last thirty years might just end up benefiting someone else.”

It was a reality Manny could not accept.
