“First, I don’t need your help. Second, fuck off.” Selena shrugged away from me as though I’d put a hand on her.

I let her go back to the armchair and fling herself into it before I followed. I sat on the edge of the other chair. I waited for her to stop crying. I knew she would, because there was no way she’d keep doing anything that might make me pity her.

“I went to The Silver Crescent last night because I wanted to be normal.”

She snorted. “Good luck.”

“That’s why I made myself look different.”

“Here’s a little clue,” she said. “Being able to make yourself look like a totally different person is so far from normal it’s not even on the same damned planet.”

I nodded after a second, but my throat got tight. “I know that, but do you have to say it like that? You really hurt my feelings. And before, what you said. That hurt my feelings, too.”

For a long few seconds, my aunt said nothing. Her eyebrows rose up and up, though, over the rim of her sunglasses. She even pulled them down to the tip of her nose to stare at me over them before pushing them back up. Shaking her head, she fell against the back of the chair.

“Don’t tell me it’s the first time someone ever hurt your little wittle pwecious baby feels…” She sat up to stare at me again, adding before I could speak, “But of course it must be. You’ve been handed everything on a silver platter your entire life, huh? Everyone treating you like you’re made of gold.”

“I wouldn’t say that,” I told her, but my lips pressed together.

She laughed. It sounded a little less like breaking glass this time. “What a trip. Stella…you said yourself that you are special. So you can’t turn around and deny it just because you don’t want to admit that everyone has handled you with kid gloves for your entire life.”

I didn’t know what to say to that. It was true that my parents, all four of them, had always treated me like I was precious. But I was, wasn’t I?

“Don’t all parents treat their children like they’re special?”

“Um, no,” Selena said. “But the fact you’re so sure about that says a lot about you.”

I pondered this. “Is that a good thing or a bad thing?”

“It’s just a thing,” she said with a huffing sigh. Then, after a second, Selena said, “I’m sorry for hurting your feelings.”

Her voice was stiff and unyielding, and I could tell it took a lot of effort for her to say it. I nodded in return. Her shoulders slumped.
