…
Oliver had no idea what had gone down outside his office.
Josefina had fallen asleep in his arms, so he figured he might as well nap with her. Because of that, he missed the whole thing entirely.
It wasn’t until he woke up and checked the security cameras that he saw what had happened.
He called George in.
George, having just splashed cold water on his face, looked way more awake than before.
“Mr. Oliver, you wanted to see me?”
“You kept my uncle Cole out in the hall?”
George tensed, his voice a little shaky. “Yes, Mr. Oliver. I was worried he’d disturb Mrs. Oliver while she was resting.”
George’s heart was pounding. Had he messed up big time?
“Good job,” Oliver said simply.
George’s eyes lit up. “Thank you, Mr. Oliver!”
“Did you handle the thing I asked about?” Oliver pressed.
“All set, sir. You’ll meet them tonight.”
Oliver nodded, satisfied, and waved George off to get back to work.
A few minutes after George left, Josefina woke up.
“What were you two whispering about? Who’s coming tonight?” she asked, stretching lazily.
“You’ll find out tonight,” Oliver said, coming over to her.
Josefina yawned and let him lead her over to the sofa.
“My grandpa called,” Oliver said. “He wants us over for dinner tonight. Are you coming?”
Josefina grinned. “If I don’t go, how will I know who this ‘mystery guest’ is? Tell your grandpa I’ll be there—wouldn’t miss it.”
“Dad, you always think ahead. I’m with you,” Wilder replied, practically buzzing with excitement.
They exchanged a look, both clearly pumped about their plan.
…
That evening at the Brandon house, family started trickling in one by one.
Cole and Wilder were the first to arrive—they wanted to pitch their deal to Brandon before Oliver could show up and throw a wrench in things.
Brandon popped on his reading glasses and started looking over the proposal, reading every line carefully.
Cole, putting on his most respectful tone, said, “Dad, this one’s a sure thing. Wilder and I are new in Westwood, don’t know a lot of people yet. It just makes sense to keep a good deal like this in the family, right?”
Brandon hadn’t even finished reading when he paused, setting the proposal aside.
“Cole, if this deal really is as good as you say, then I don’t need to be a part of it. I’m old—I’ve got more money than I know what to do with. You’re still young. Go out there and make your fortune.”
Cole and Wilder were both left speechless.
